Central Saint Martins MFA Degree Show 2011 work

I completed my MA Fine Art at Central Saint Martins College of Arts and Design in September this year. My final work was a series of nine paintings in oil on canvas and canvas board. The paintings relate to my immediate impressions of London and travelling to and from the city from Oxford by train. The work was painted from my imagination, but in keeping with my practice up to this point, also draws on the ghosts of photographic images and drawing from life that I'd collected over the course of the year. The paintings are landscapes.

A series of small oil paintings on canvas, varnished. Inspired by vanitas painting, the subject is the swift, depicting a bird that's been called 'Devil Screamer', and is the ace aviator of British birds. I painted these swifts after seeing tagged swift skins in the ornithology archive at the Oxford University Museum.

I was interested in seeing what I could learn by copying existing paintings. I got caught up in Goya. His portrait of Wellington, painted in 1812, hangs in the National Gallery. Once I started really looking at the Wellington painting, I got caught up in that too. I suppose I wanted a picture of a handsome general on the studio wall. It made a nice change from the newspaper clippings, medical photographs and assortment of other 'contemporary' stuff that surrounds me in the crowded space that I share with other students. After the Duke, it was a pleasure to paint Byron and then the Maya. I revelled in the richness of the oil paint. Each picture took longer than I'd anticipated. At the outset, I thought that I'd be able to churn out a copy quickly and objectively as an exercise, but the opposite happened. I found that when I paint a portrait, something of me appears in the face of the subject. Quite revealing really.

Lindsay at Oxford Framing Services did a great job of framing 'High Street', a mixed-media painting on cardboard that was exhibited at the Brookes 'Obsessions' show at Modern Art Oxford in March this year. It now hangs in the entrance hall of Headington Hill Hall.

This month, I was lucky enough to be invited to show a painting at Albania's national gallery of modern art, in Tirana. The piece is another cityscape, Oxford High Street, 8 x 6 ft painted in acryllics and house paints on Oxfam boxes. Why 12 hours? I had a day to complete the painting before the containers were shipped to Tirana. It took me 12 hours to complete it.

About Paintings

The paintings in this series are figurative, mixed media works on canvas depicting streets in the city of Oxford, England. The pictures vary in size from 1x1.5m to 40x50cm. I use collage, basing the work on photographs. I want the images to be immediate, like atmospheric snapshots of streets and roads at a particular time. The Mini features in several of the paintings. Because the car is made in Oxford, on the site of the old Morris works, I associate it with a modern, urban Oxford that has links to the car trade of the past. Oxford is a city of contrasts; I'm inspired by the long streets, and variety of architectural styles that are reflected in the skyline.

The focus of these paintings is the sky: the point of freedom above long, dark city streets. These are not gloomy paintings; for me they communicate a vibrant interaction with the streets and a celebration of paint. Peter Doig has been an inspiration to me. His paintings have wonderful perspective and mystery created through layers of thinned oil paint and varnish. I'm also a great admirer of Marlene Dumas' painting.

The paintings are hanging in my home at the moment, for Oxford Artweeks (17 - 24 May). This year, the Artfile Gallery in Bicester took them to the Affordable Art Fair in London, and to the same fair in Bristol. I've sold 4 paintings in this series so far, and have commissions for three more paintings based on the painting with the red car that sold in Bristol over the weekend.

About Photographs

I'll often refer to photographs in my paintings. Landscape and urban settings are particularly interesting to me. I use a Nikon Coolpix L3 digital camera, carrying it with me on my travels. I'm also learning how to do 'wet' photography. In New York, I carried an old Nikon camera loaded with black and white film. There's a surprise element to using film that I really enjoy. Once I've achieved some decent results in the dark room, I'll put some images online.

The first five images were taken in New York in February. I was excited to be walking the streets of this beautiful city in sharp, bright light. Everywhere, the architecture and people caught my eye. The city is larger than life. I loved the industrial engineering on bridges and especially the docks. There had been a heavy snow shower a day or two before I arrived, and there was still a good residue of snow in Central Park and on wooden posts at the docks. The air was very crisp and cold. Walking the city at night was another great experience; so much light and activity through to the early hours. I'd like to be able to take night shots on film. I don't have the kind of camera that I need to do this at the moment. A limitation with the digital camera that I'm using is that I can't blow the images up to the size that I'd like to; ideally at least 8 x 10 inches. Some of these pictures would be great large-scale.

The second set of images is a random selection of pictures taken in places as diverse as the Alps, Turkey, Corsica, and the town of Corby in the Midlands. I'm always carrying a camera, and have a growing collection of 'snaps' that capture some of the quirkiness or spirit of the places that I encounter.
